Proclaim: The Office for Mission Renewal is delighted to invite parishes and communities (including clergy, leadership and parishioners) to join the 2026 Called and Gifted Discernment Process.
Every Christian is called to participate in the mission of Jesus Christ. God gives each of us particular spiritual gifts, or charisms, to help us serve others and build up the Church.
The Called & Gifted Discernment Process is an opportunity to discover these gifts and learn how God may be inviting you to use them in your communities, in your lives.
Developed by the Catherine of Siena Institute, Called & Gifted has helped more than 200,000 Catholics around the world recognise and discern the spiritual gifts God has given them.
Through the Called & Gifted process, you will be accompanied to recognise patterns in your life, explore where you may be gifted and begin discerning how these gifts can be put into practice.
It is more than asking 'What am I good at?' but discerning 'How is God uniquely gifting me to serve others and participate in his mission?'
Please note that parishes and communities can only send up to five people which includes parish clergy. The Parish Priest must approve the group.
What is a Charism?
Charisms are spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit. They are different from natural talents or skills. While our natural abilities can certainly be used by God, a charism is a particular way the Holy Spirit works through us for the good of others and the mission of the Church.
Discerning your charisms can help you understand how God may be calling you to serve and how your gifts can contribute to fostering a more vibrant, vital and viable community.
1. Workshop
Friday 11 September, 6pm–9pm and
Saturday 12 September 2026, 9am–4pm
Catholic Leadership Centre, East Melbourne
The workshop provides the foundation for the discernment process. Through formation, prayer, reflection and conversation, you will explore:
- What charisms are and how they differ from natural talents
- Different types of charisms
- How charisms are recognised and discerned
- How God works through our gifts for the sake of others
- The role of charisms in the life of the Church
- How your gifts can be put into practice through real-life experiences
The Catholic Spiritual Gifts Inventory will be completed as part of your preparation for the workshop.
2. Personal Gifts Interview
Following the workshop, you will take part in a one-hour personal discernment interview.
You will be accompanied by a trained discernment facilitator who will help you explore your inventory results and your own experiences of serving others.
Together, you will look for patterns that may point towards particular charisms and identify opportunities to put these gifts into practice.
3. In-depth Discernment
You will then participate in four facilitated small-group sessions.
These sessions provide space to reflect on your experiences, explore possible charisms and learn how to discern the ways God may be working through your gifts.
The process is not simply about identifying a list of gifts. It is about learning to recognise how God is already at work in your life and discerning how you might respond more intentionally to his call.

Time commitment
The Called & Gifted process requires a commitment to the full journey.
- Introductory Workshop: 7 hours across Friday evening and Saturday
- Personal Gifts Interview: 1 hour
- In-depth Discernment: 4 facilitated small-group sessions
